Why Nihi Sumba ruined every other surf trip for me

One left-hand wave, twelve riders a day, and a stay that proves luxury and surf culture can actually live in the same place.

Nihi Sumba
"Sumba isn't a resort, it's a horse-and-ocean way of life. Go for the wave, stay for everything else."

Occy's Left is one of the best private waves on earth. Nihi caps it at twelve surfers a day. That alone would be enough to write about, but it's not even the best part of staying here.

What gets you is the rest of the island. The Sandalwood horses on the beach at first light. The cliffside spa safari that takes half a day and starts with a barefoot walk through rice fields. The food, which is genuinely Indonesian and not the international hotel version.

I came for the wave. I left thinking about the horses.

Go for ten nights. Five surfing, five not.
